Delegation of Stocking Decisions Under Asymmetric Demand Information

چکیده
Problem definition: We consider the incentive design problem of a retailer that delegates stocking decisions to its store managers who are privately informed about local demand. Academic/practical relevance: Shortages highly costly in retail, but less concern for managers, as their exact amounts usually not recorded. In order align incentives and attain desired service levels, retailers need mechanisms absence information on shortage quantities. Methodology: The headquarters knows underlying demand process at is one J possible Wiener processes, whereas manager specific process. creates single before each period. uses an scheme based end-of-period leftover inventory stock-out occasion prespecified inspection time end determine significance relative evaluating performance manager. formulate constrained nonlinear optimization period setting dynamic program multiperiod setting. Results: show proposed “early inspection” leads perfect alignment when equals two under mild conditions. more general cases, we performs strictly better than inspecting stock-outs achieves near-perfect alignment. Our numerical experiments, using both synthetic real data, reveal this can lead considerable cost reductions. Managerial implications: Stock-out-related measures typically included managers’ scorecards retail. propose novel, easy, practical measurement does depend actual amount shortages. This new incentivizes use private retailer’s best interest clearly outperforms centralized ordering systems common practice.

Credit Constraints and Decisions in Exports: Theory under Asymmetric Information
This paper examines why credit constraints for domestic and exporting firms arise in a setting where banks do not observe firms’ productivities. To maintain incentive-compatibility, banks lend below the amount needed for first-best production. The longer time needed for export shipments induces a tighter credit constraint on exporters than on purely domestic firms, even in the exporters’ home m...
متن کاملDelegation vs. Control of Component Procurement Under Asymmetric Cost Information and Simple Contracts
A manufacturer must choose whether to delegate component procurement to her tier-1 supplier, or control it directly. Due to information asymmetry about suppliers’ production costs and the use of simple quantity discount or price-only contracts, either delegation or control can yield substantially higher expected profit for the manufacturer. Delegation tends to outperform control when (1) the ma...
متن کاملDecisions under subjective information
This paper addresses two closely related aspects of subjective information. First, no two agents necessarily see the same thing when they observe the same object. Second, no two agents have the same concepts in mind when they use the same term in a shared language. I present a framework to give rigorous meaning to these ideas, in particular by modeling them in appropriate topologies. From there...
متن کاملInformation Technology Investment Decisions under Asymmetric Information: a Modified Rational Expectation Model
In this paper, we propose that information technology (IT) managers make investment decisions about new IT initiatives based on a modified rational expectation model. Unlike traditional rational expectation models, we emphasize the relevance of market uncertainty and its impact on the return of new IT investment. This results in information acquisition decisions by managers that can cause infor...
متن کاملGiving Advice vs. Making Decisions: Transparency, Information, and Delegation
We generalize standard delegation models to consider policymaking when both information and authority are dispersed among multiple actors. In our theory, the principal may delegate partial authority to a privately-informed agent while also reserving some authority for the principal’s use after observing the agent’s decision. Counterintuitively, the equilibrium amount of authority delegated to t...
